It’s been a while since we last spoke so I thought I would send you a little African literature just to keep you going until your visit in 2 weeks time! Can’t believe it’s so soon, I’ve spoken to all bottle stores and they have all stocked up on Jameson, ha-ha!
Getting back to the outdoor life is proving difficult these days with work always seeming to know just when you want to plan something fun…
However we have managed to escape a couple of times. Dad and I attended a shotgun shoot with our club, a qualifying round of sorts, for the Inter Provincial Shotgun Shoot. It was great fun, each shooting 25 clays, this is quite hard if you don’t do it regularly! Some flying toward and some away, some from the left and some from the right and then of course the rabbit, rolling and jumping across the open piece of veld – amper donners onmoontlik! Luckily I qualified for the next shoot. Only one problem though, ek het die haelgeweer moertoe geskiet en hy moes eers wapensmit toe gaan! One of the locking lugs under the barrel that holds the fore piece had shifted and this caused the ejectors to malfunction.
I thought the qualifier was difficult, but seeing the competition clays flying around at Olympic speeds of up to 120km/h I just laughed! I think because of pure nerves… Subsequently I now had to borrow a shotgun so my friend Deon came to the rescue. He came from Kroonstad and we shot with his, ironically it’s the same make and model as mine so I was still relatively confident…
The setup was similar to qualifying just more difficult, each shooter gets 50 clays, one of the traps even shoots the clay straight up in the air, roughly 40m and trying to hit that one with cross winds is no joke! Another trap shot 2 clays at the same time flying in tandem slowly splitting up and the next one shot 2 at the same time but one from the left and one from the right! Moer ouboet dit was nou sports! All ended well and I got Bronze (66%) Our team overall however did not make the prizes. It was quite amazing to watch the winner; he has been the SA champ for 15years! He got 48/50 clays!!
Next up is my Skilled Hunter Shoot this Saturday, It works on a points basis where you shoot at a life-size Impala target and have to score above a certain amount of points to get the award. 9 shots in total, 3 at 200m (Lying), 3 at 100m (Sitting) and 3 at 50m (Standing). We’ll see how it goes and I’ll let you know! I have to run now so until next time…
