All three southern hemisphere giants are gearing up for the World Cup in France starting on September 7 with White pleased with the progress of his team despite the selection controversy surrounding flanker Luke Watson.
A South African newspaper said White had confirmed he was forced to pick Watson, whose father Cheeky took a stand against apartheid, withdrawing from Springbok contention in the 1970s because he refused to play in a whites-only team.
“The message was that if I wanted a future in South African rugby beyond the World Cup I had to include Watson in the team and pick him for the World Cup,” White told the Saturday Star.
The paper said the move was part of the South African Rugby Union’s (SARU) plan to “Africanise” rugby in the country.
It said the first Springbok XV of 2008 would be captained by Watson and coached by Peter de Villiers, trainer of the Emerging Springboks, and would include 10 players of colour.

Ek sê bring daai 4×4 bakkie met die moerse lang tou!!
Are these okes never gonna learn…. no springbok chosen on merits means no wins… means no supporters… means no money. Eishh…
One of my mates (Dave Lockhart) made a good suggestion – If a black African Team is so important to the politicians why don’t they do what the Kiwi’s did – Create a black African only team that competes against all the same teams the Springboks do – If they are good enough they will get international recognition on their own. This way the politicians get what they want and we don’t lose our Springboks.
The current players just need to improve their tan. Perception is everything!
Good luck for the weekend!!!
Good call Rosco
I must admit I am slightly worried about the game on Saturday – Only slightly :-)
Just got news that the South African Sport Federation and Olympic Committee have stated that no team that has a 50/50 representation will go to the Beijing Olympics next year…. I wonder if this goes for Soccer also as last time I checked it was about 80/20 (Black/White) representation.
As long as there is no restriction on the size of the teams we are allowed to enter. We can then send a extra group of people equal to the original team to make up for the 50/50.
I just hope they don’t get upset if the extra athletes don’t get any medals.
Not sure if they know that the colour of your skin does not let you qualify for a medal.
In South Africa this might currently be the case but at the Olympics it won’t.
